How a Car Exhaust System Works

Your vehicle exhaust system is quite complex and as soon as one part does not work properly anymore, it has various effects on the car’s fuel economy and the environment. Simply put, your car exhaust system works like this: While the motor runs, your car produces emissions. These consist of six gases, half of them are toxic and need to be filtered out. The manifold in your car diverts the gases from the motor cylinders and leads them through the catalytic converter, where the toxic gases are removed.

Next step of the exhaust system is that the gases pass through the muffler, who reduces the noise with its intelligent construction of tubes inside (sound waves crash against each other to cancel themselves). This is why, when your muffler has a hole due to physical damage or simple corrosion over the years, the noise is so much louder: Because the sound waves can escape. The tail pipe leads the exhaust gases away from the passengers and out of the car.

A fully intact exhaust system does not only contribute to a cleaner environment and reduces noise, but it also has a major impact on your car’s power and fuel efficiency. If you notice any problems with your exhaust system, Malvern Auto Tech can repair any exhaust problems or upgrade your vehicle to a more efficient muffler.
