Brakes and Brake Repair

Your brakes are a complex system. Our brake specialists guarantee a top quality repair – ensuring your safety.

It is not normal. And it is definitely not good. A very low or spongy pedal means there’s likely air in the hydraulic lines of your car’s brake system. That creates low hydraulic pressure. If the hydraulic pressure gets too low, your car’s brake pads or shoes may no longer be able to apply enough force and friction to safely stop your car. An immediate inspection of your car’s brake system is strongly advised.

Swing by Malvern Auto Tech today to have your brakes checked.

Brakes squeak for a variety of reasons. Often it’s harmless, the result of something like temporary moisture in the brake pads. But continuous squeals or grinding sounds should be taken very seriously as they may mean it’s time for new brake pads or shoes. Worn brakes can mean longer stopping distances and difficulty stopping in emergency situations. And rotors and drums that wear too thin can even become over-stressed to the point of cracking or breaking.

If you hear squealing or grinding, have your brakes checked right away. And even if you don’t hear squealing or grinding, have your brakes inspected once a year. It’s essential to be proactive about your brakes as regular service and, when appropriate, simple brake adjustments and repairs can make a real difference in your car’s safety.

The pre-purchase inspection includes inspection of the vehicle’s engine, cooling system, ignition system, transmission, suspension, steering, brakes, tyres, all of the lights and the electrical system. Normally, it’s no problem to squeeze in a pre-purchase inspection, so just give us a call: 9824 7778.

Mufflers and Exhaust

Your car’s exhaust system is pretty complex. Excess noise could be from a number of sources in the exhaust system including cracks or holes in manifolds, gaskets, pipes or the muffler itself. To find out for sure where the noise is coming from, just stop by Malvern Auto Tech. We can not only find it, we can fix it, too.

Your exhaust system – and the muffler in particular – is very sophisticated, although you can’t really appreciate it just looking under your car. If you were to cut it open you would likely find what looks to be a bundle of metal tubes with holes in them. And while they might look simple, inside the muffler these tubes work together to force sound waves to hit one another in very precise ways, cancelling the sound in the process. With all this hidden engineering, it’s no wonder mufflers can’t be a one-size-fits-all replacement part.

In order to know whether or not a muffler is broken, someone will have to get underneath the car to take a look at it. Listen for increased noise that indicates a broken muffler with help from a certified master mechanic.

We have a range of exhausts to suit over 2,000 different vehicles (including European and 4WD) which can be expertly fitted to your car. Here you can find more muffler service information.

Excessive rust or broken rubber hangers can cause mufflers, pipes, and other parts of the exhaust system to hang extremely low or break, and that can be hazardous, especially to folks driving behind you. However, these aren’t always things that can be easily assessed by just peeking under your car. As a rule, we recommend having your exhaust system professionally inspected at least once a year.

Oil Changes

A good rule of thumb is every 5,000KM’s for an oil change. However, follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. They will specify the frequency for an oil change for your driving conditions. The frequency of your oil and filter changes should follow those recommendations.

An oil change puts fresh oil into your car. More importantly, an oil change drains out the old oil that can become filled with dust, metal particles or other contaminants. As your oil ages, outside items make their way in. Without an oil change, this contamination can lower your gas mileage or in the worse case, cause your engine to fail. An oil change is a great preventive step to help keep you car running clean and smooth. Make sure to change your oil filter as well, it helps to remove impurities from the oil and the engine.

A good question for our car service FAQ. It’s something that most people probably aren’t familiar with. The first number (such as 5W) indicates the low-temperature (Winter) viscosity. Viscosity simply is a measure of an oil’s ability to flow and protect at certain temperatures. The lower the number, the easier the oil will flow (and protect) in cold weather when starting your car. The second number (such as 30, in 5W-30), indicates the thickness of the oil at operating (high) temperatures. When you get an oil change, you should follow your manufacturer’s recommendations. Take a look at your owner’s manual before your next trip to Malvern Auto Tech for an oil change.
